To get the maximum discount you have to lock into a specific VM type, which is why it is extra important to know what you are getting out of each. Also, for AWS you can actually automatically apply the 1 year prices to most on-demand instances by using third party services like DoIT's Flexsave (included in their free tier!), so this segment may still be relevant even if you don't want to reserve.
